Who needs you

If you've been following my tumblr, you probably know by now how much I'm a fan of The Orwells.  And how inspired I was by their performance on The Late Show with David Letterman.  Well, I've re-watched that video so many times.  It's kinda hard to explain but they have that special something that I look for in a band.  It makes me happy.  It makes me feel alive.  I've been wanting to make this but couldn't get myself to sit down and just do it.  Then I had a really bad day, so the next day I totally channeled that energy into making this.  Took me a while and I intentionally made it super short.  Well, I hope you like it.  Here are some original "stills" and watch the video at the bottom of this post.  Oh, and FYI, I created a totally separate tumblr focusing just on my play doh artworks.  It's called heyho-letsdoh.tumblr.com and @heyho_letsdoh on instagram.  Please follow if you like that kind of stuff.  Thanks!

Go out and get it

Last night I went to the sneak preview of the Black Lips' Middle Eastern tour documentary.  The screening was at the awesome Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax, brought to you by the amazing Cinefamily.  If you don't know about them yet, now is the time to check it out, www.cinefamily.org.  I also saw the Jay Reatard documentary here few years ago.  Well, onto the Black Lips.  I really enjoyed the film.  It did exactly what the film was meant to do.  I hope you guys all get to see it as well.  As a long time fan of the Black Lips, there's something special about them.  People tend to overuse this term, but when I say it, I really mean it, that they are truly down to earth.  Humble, regardless of how successful they are.  They just seem like amazing smart people making great music.  And that is why I love them so much.

Everyboday wants to change the world

As you know, I've been a long time fan of My Chemical Romance.  They really fill that part of me where I get inspired by sounds, visuals, and emotions.  Basically, I think I love them for being so theatrical and having a story and meaning for everything they do for each album.  I'm also a big fan of Marc Webb, who directed their early music videos.  The part that really impressed me the most was that they were artistic and beautifully dark at times.  I appreciate the fact that they were never gore-y or violent.  I can get into that subject later.

Here is my latest play doh film.  I know it's taken me a while to make more stop motion videos, but I've been very busy with my regular career.  So, you know I do this as a hobby and it's really hard to have enough time to work on this.  But I do enjoy it so much.  When My Chemical Romance came out with "Danger Days", I was relieved that they did not disappoint.  Being a fan of music videos, I get really excited when a good one comes along, and needless to say I was pretty seriously inspired and excited about the one for "Na Na Na", co-directed by Roboshobo and Gerard Way.  So, here is my short play-doh stopmotion interpretation of that video.  Thank you for watching.

I ♥ JCDC - Part 2

I wanted to remake the first video because at the time it was made, I didn't even have a camera tripod (hence the shaky shots), and I had really bad lighting (it was way too dark). I liked the play-doh figures so I thought it deserved a better film quality. Eventually, I decided to add 5 new girls and create a "Part 2". The whole process took a really long period, since I don't have a lot of spare time. Well, here it is. I hope you enjoy it! My second tribute video to the fabulous designer, Mr. Jean-Charles de Castelbajac!

Youngest Indie presents "Hedi Boys"

Finally! Here it is! I had so much fun making this one. It took a long time because I really wanted to make it special. Making the play-doh boys were fun. Shooting the scenes were the hardest part, but I am happy with the outcome. This time around I played around with lighting and had better sets. I have memories of painting the brick wall this past summer before going out to the Getty Center. I spent a lot of my weekends working on this project. Thanks to my sister who bought me a tripod for my camera. The editing process got me super excited. I really hope you like it.

Hedi Boys: A tribute to Hedi Slimane

Finally I am finished with my next play-doh film! Two years ago, when I started rediscovering the possibilities of play-doh and someone told me I should make fashion figures, I knew that I wanted to do a rock boys theme as a follow up to my JCDC girls film. I also knew that it had to be a tribute to the amazing Hedi Slimane and all his contributions to this fantastic and exciting men's fashion scene. The very look he created that influenced so many. During his days at Dior Homme were most exciting for me. I couldn't wait to see the next collection. Even now, I enjoy his beautiful stylish photography. Besides having a demanding full time job keeping me from working on this, there was another bit of a problem. I couldn't find black colored play-doh. And I needed a lot of it. I couldn't even find it online. I printed and selected looks from the Spring 2006 show, my favorite collection. Then it was earlier this year in the winter that I drove around to toy stores, and amazingly enough, I found individual cans of white, peach pink, and, yes, black. It was amazing because I had tried looking for it at the same stores before, and they didn't have it. Anyways, I stocked up and went to work right away I was so excited. I was done with the figures by Spring/Summer and spent the summer working on props and painting sets. I also finally got a mini tripod. Can you believe I used to make my stop motion without a tripod? So difficult and the quality lacked. But this time around, I focused on areas of improvement and was very ambitious in creating a great rock video. Finally, I was able to execute what had been stuck inside my head for years. I hope you enjoy it. The video will premiere this Thursday night! Come back on Thursday!
