I've been waiting for Dry The River to come play a show in LA and I was excited when they finally did. Even with high expectations, they didn't disappoint at all. It felt so good to see a great live act again. Some time last year when I first heard "New Ceremony", it gave me chills. It was a heavy and hopeful song that was so beautiful, and the vocals had a Jeff Buckley magical quality to it. "No Rest" is pretty awesome, too. I believe they only have an EP out and I couldn't find a U.S. release date for their album, but I will definitely be picking up a copy as soon as it's out.

I've been a fan of The Drums for a while now. I was supposed to see them a year ago when they played LA, but I had a special friend in town the same day, so I never made it to the show. It was a dilemma for me because I really wanted to see them, and I really wanted to see my friend. But, I had to see my friend since I hadn't seen him in years. So I was ecstatic when I heard that The Drums were playing the Echoplex for CYP2. (CYP and I go way back!) I was even more excited since it was a small venue. Not surprisingly, the first show sold out, so they added another day. I went to the Tuesday show, of course. Anyways, they played everything! Well, almost everything. Down By The Water, We Tried, I Felt Stupid, I Need Fun, Book of Stories, It Will All End in Tears, along with songs from the new album, Portamento, like Money, Book of Revelation. Jonathan is such a great frontman. I've been pretty tired and blue lately, the show lifted my spirits. I had so much fun. I haven't danced that much in such a long, long time. Everyone dancing and singing along because we love the music so much, that makes me happy. By the end of the night, my clothes were drenched in sweat, and I had lost my voice. Pretty awesome.

Their last album was amazing. I get so scared when a band kinda goes into another direction, or gets way too experimental for their next album or what not, but when I heard Portamento. It was similar but different to the last album. Definitely a notch up. And emotional. I absolutely love it.

I had the most amazing Labor Day weekend. Saturday, we got to the beach early and rented bikes. I rode a pretty green Schwinn bike. Perry's has upgraded all their rental bikes to Scwhinns. It was overcast and cool. We rode south, then came back and ate yogurt parfaits that we packed. After our snacks and coffee, we headed to the water. The sun started to peer through and the clouds started to burn off. We weren't wearing bathing suits so we only wet our feet and watched the waves. After, we made our way to the pier where we got free water bottles, beach balls, and frisbees from the "Big Bang Theory" promo team. We rode the ferris wheel, which I didn't enjoy because I have a fear of heights but someone made me get on it anyway. Next, we ate at Bubba Gump Shrimp! I've lived in LA all my life, and I just never went in there to eat. For seafood, we grew up going to the seafood marketplace at the Redondo Beach pier. That's still the best. I enjoy straight up seafood, just plain steamed. But since we were in Santa Monica, we decided to finally try Bubba Gump. It was really good and fun! I got a light up cup and all. And you know, Forrest Gump is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. I reference it a lot anyways. It was such a lovely day. Can't believe it's already September!

My second time at the Tim Burton Exhibit at LACMA. It was a beautiful hot summer day. I wore my favorite white eyelet romper from Madewell. Later, we went to Milk for some ice cream treats. I had the citrus vanilla float.

Damndogs play "doom disco" that you can dance to in your glitter boots. They're a band from Melbourne, Australia and did a mini-tour throughout Southern California. I discovered them just in time to see two of their shows. They totally rock out and are super cool. Check out their tunes on their website.

LA summer has not been the same since global warming got worse. It hasn't been really hot. Nice and warm, but not hot. And now it feels like fall is just around the bend. Sigh. Nevertheless, the weather has been absolutely gorgeous here. This is a recap of the past few weeks. I basically ate good food a lot. I loved Cham Bistro so much that I went back again the next weekend. Same with Carmela. Their most popular ice cream flavor is Salted Caramel, which is lovely, but I loved their Brown Sugar Vanilla. They also have Rose Petal flavor. Then, I forgot to go to the Street Art Exhibit at MOCA, so we went the day before the last day of the exhibit. I took lots of photos, but I had mixed feelings about it. More on that later, maybe. I enjoy most street art, but I thought this was over the top and some parts were unnecessary. I also hit up Amoeba on "new music Tuesday" to pick up my copy of SKYING. Then, dinner at Umami Burger. We sat outside and Space15Twenty was doing an outdoor summer movie night. They were showing "The Fifth Element", fashionably famous for costumes designer by Jean Paul Gaultier. Umami was yum. Later in the week, I went to the LA premiere of the Jay Reatard documentary "Better Than Something". Known for his crazy and violent live shows, you would never really know how brilliant, articulate, passionate, and intelligent he was. I connected with his music at such a personal level that I was just so heart broken when I found out about his passing. I remember that night so clearly. I'm still sad about it. I'm a big fan of his. There was a q&a with the filmmakers afterwards, and basically it started out as being a sort of an EPK to promote "Watch Me Fall", which turned into a documentary after his death. This theater shows the most amazing selections. I'm in love. Afterwards, we walked down Fairfax to Canter's for phosphate. Chilly or warm, summer evenings are awesome.

I first heard "Get Away" and that song instantly caught my attention. Then, I heard it was by Yuck. Luckily for us, "Get Away" is not the only good song by them. I am absolutely in love with "Shook Down". This is one of my favorite live videos of them that I often watch over and over on YouTube. Also, I have this song on repeat. I slowly got past that obsession and found all their other songs to be equally wonderful and lovely, such as "Suck", "Operation", "Georgia", and "The Wall". Seems like I am in love with their entire album. After many missed chances to see them (they had previously played LA at the Echo and Satellite), I finally got to see them at the Troubadour where they played an awesome set to a sold out house. Their songs make me sigh. The soft guitar picking and fuzzy sounds tug at parts of my heart with a bittersweet sadness.

I finally went to see the Tim Burton exhibit with my lovely friends. We went after work on a weekday hoping it would be less busy. Sadly, no photos allowed. I will definitely go back again several more times. It's definitely inspiring and wonderful. Afterwards, we went to eat dinner at Bloom Cafe on Pico Blvd, and their menu is fantastic! I highly recommend this place. Their grilled salmon with brown rice was delicious, and they also have a fresh juice menu. Last night, driving through Hollywood, I drove by Amoeba and was happy to see who was up on their main display. The new Horrors album is out in the UK since July but it will be released in the US on August 9. Can't wait to get my actual physical copy.

Finally got to see Myles' new band Viva Modula. I have a major style crush on him. Having been a longtime fan of Bloodcat Love, I wasn't really sure what to expect. It was an intimate awesome show, surrounded by their fans and friends. Now, I find myself listening to their songs on repeat. You can download their EP online for free so go check it out now! My current favorite song is "Paper Tiger". They are planning to hit the studio to record their album and I'm excited for it.

Trying to see the bright side

It's become a summer tradition of ours to go to the Hammer Museum free concert series that happens every Thursday in July. The first one I ever went to was back in 2006 when Run Run Run and Silversun Pickups played. It's an awesome place and I absolutely love enjoying a summer night with good music in a nice UCLA museum in Westwood. Other bands I've seen here are Shiny Toy Guns, People in Planes, Deadly Syndrome, Band of Skulls, Amazing Baby, Miss Derringer, and more. As you can see, the lineup does not disappoint. This year, I was excited to see that The Soft Pack were playing. I hadn't seen them in such a long time it was kind of ridiculous. Hanni El Khatib went on first. It's just him with his guitar and a drummer. It was nice and loud and had a modernized soulful rock sound. Very nice indeed. Then, The Soft Pack played starting with "The Bright Side". It just made me dance. There were stanchions and velvet ropes that kind of stood in front of the stage. By the middle of the set, we were all pushed forward to the edge of the stage. Some people almost fell onto the stage. This guy in the crowd adjusted the moved monitor. But it was all good fun. The fans were happy and dancing. It's been a while since I've had this much fun. And I got the set list, it had some interesting stick figure drawings.

To make my life harder, or more enjoyable, I tend to like things that are harder to find. Not intentionally, but it ends up being that way. Such as magazines. I really like foreign magazines such as i-D, NME, Lula, Jalouse, etc. I used to be able to find these magazines at Borders. Well, now that Borders went bankrupt and closed all their stores here, I wasn't sure where to go. For hard to find magazines, I'd suggest the newsstand at Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, or the one on Hollywood and Cahuenga. Last weekend, I went to the one in Hollywood. Go during the day, and you'll find plenty of street meter parking close by. But meter parking is still expensive, so I'd recommend you go with a bag of coins, or know what your are looking for. The lady that works there is super cool, too! Then, for music, you can always buy stuff online, but it's fun to go out for some human interaction, right? Then, go hang out at Amoeba and try not to spend too much money because it's very tempting to buy everything you see there. Such as those Beatles lamps. Anyways, here's what I bought recently.

Happy Summer! I love spring and summer. I don't do well in cold weather. I get cold very easily. I blame Global Warming for last year's not so hot summer. It was really weird. It felt like we didn't have a summer. I didn't know what season it was. Then, it was fall. This year has been warmer overall. On the first day of summer, we all went to a local place to have some burgers. We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. I love it that it's light outside til past 8pm. I love it that you can leave the house in the morning without a sweater or a jacket on. I love the smell of summer nights' air. Sigh... I always try to make the most out of it. So far, so good.

I've been looking in a new direction

If you've been to the Glasshouse in Pomona, you know that it's basically like a warehouse with a stage. Not very glamorous, but nevertheless, it's an awesome venue because it's small and intimate. That being said, please excuse these blurry pictures due to lack of lighting, and lots of dancing and madness. Black Lips are back with their much talked-about new album "Arabia Mountain" with tracks produced by Mark Ronson. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it to their show this time. Also, after previous experiences, I wasn't sure if I could handle the crowd, now that I'm older. I figure I could just stand at the side, or the back, and dance by myself, but is that even possible? When they go on, I just say forget it and go for it, then get totally beat up and end up passing out or something. But does it make any sense if I don't go to their show? So, I went to their show. It was lots of fun. By the end, Jared was crowd surfing, kids were on stage, Ian and Cole kissed, and we looked like a hot mess, drenched in sweat, and water courtesy of Cerebral Ballzy's super soaker that they kept shooting at the crowd. Besides, it was cool to hear their new songs live. So, go out and get it. Oh and you can read my older posts about them (see links at bottom of the post), I re-read them the other day, and I'm totally like gushing. Yeah, I'm definitely a huge fan. Black Lips!!

I'm kind of behind on my blogging. Couple weekends ago, we went to the Make Music Pasadena festival. An annual free event full of awesome bands. This was my first time going. Previous years, The Raveonettes and Plastiscines played. I wanted to see them but it was literally over 90 degrees and I remember just staying home. This year, it wasn't too hot. It had been June gloom grey skies all week, until the day of the festival. I was expecting the same, but the sun came out and it got pretty warm in there, in that crowd, with the sun beating down on us. I remembered why I don't really like to go to these things. Too crowded, chaos, too hot, short sets, lots of waiting, porta potties. Yeah. Well, with that being said, I still had a nice time I guess. This was my fifth time seeing The Morning Benders. Definitely better to see them at a headline show, instead of a free event. Best Coast was fun. There were lots of fans and it got super crowded. A little too crowded with uncomfortable lack of personal space. I don't know. It gets crazy crowded at the shows I go to, but the vibe is different. I just don't like big events like this. But I'm still glad I went. Oh, and need I even talk about the unnecessary long pauses caused by crowds blocking the pathways and police shutting down the performance until it cleared? Oh, gawd...

A good set feels short because you wish it went on and on. A bad set feels long even when it's short because you want it to stop. That being said, I thought Mona played a really short set. But, later, I realized it wasn't short, I just wanted to see more. Almost a year since I first fell in love with their song. Can you believe I still freakin play that song on repeat? What is wrong with me. Thankfully, their other songs are good as well. Their debut album is out in Europe and a US release is set for September. If you're like me and can't wait and like buying albums, you can get it online. So good. So exciting.

Euphoria, take my hand

Glasvegas is back with a new album "Euphoric Heartbreak" and they played a sold out show at the Troubadour. I saw them two years ago at the same venue. Watching the show, at moments, I felt completely captivated by their stage presence and their sound. I love it when I get that feeling because it feels special and I'm not easily impressed by every band out there. This band, however, has it. They played several from their new album like "Lots Sometimes" and "Euphoria, Take My Hand", and hits from their older album. For the encore, James sang "Flowers and Football Tops" and I kind of choked up and feared I might cry (but I didn't). That song reminds me of two people who are no longer here. It was a really sad time in my life. Anyways, the show was awesome, we all sang along to "Go Square Go". Go pick up the new album 'cause here we f*cking go.

Didn't I say how bad I feel

I don't look up bands and then listen to them. I need to hear the music first somehow. I listen to NME radio or Little Radio (or some other source) and only bother to look up the artists' names when I hear something I really like. So, last summer, I heard this song I really liked (If You Wanna) but couldn't find the name of the band for several months. They were still pretty new and Google didn't seem to know who sang "If you wanna come back it's alright, it's alright" until about December. Then, I heard another song (Post Breakup Sex), and was able to have my sister Shazaam it. I figured I really liked their sound. This band happens to be The Vaccines, whom I was fortunate enough to see at Satellite (ex-Spaceland) earlier this year. They recently supported Arctic Monkeys on their U.S. tour. I would've gone, except the show sold out before they announced that The Vaccines were supporting. Not that I don't like Arctic Monkeys, I actually do. And I've seen them twice many years ago. So I thought I missed out. But, thankfully, The Vaccines played an in-store at Amoeba in Hollywood. I love the entire album. Please go buy it.

Get teenage kicks right through the night

The first time I ever heard "Teenage Kicks", it was love. The seventies punk rock riffs, the unique and charming ring of Feargal's voice, the happy hand claps, the sexy fun lyrics, and danceable beat. I was blown away and instantly became a fan of The Undertones. I love that punk rock sound of the late 70s and early 80s. Definitely my favorite kind of sound. Well, so I heard they were coming to town (minus Feargal, of course), but I had to go anyway. They were so tight and awesome, I had so much fun. It was so amazing to see them. And I have a crush on Damian now. They're all just so cool. However, I totally messed up my video settings while dancing so my video of "Teenage Kicks" is way blurry. Accidentally hit the macro button or something. So sad. Well, not that sad because I was there in person. Sad I cannot share it with you. Anyways, the whole night was full of energy and all kind of surreal whilst being surrounded by happy fans of all ages. Legendary.

Weezer covers night at Que Sera. Part of their monthly "Under the Covers Open Mic" series. So much fun and lots of friendly talented people. I think everyone sang something from the Blue Album and Pinkerton, except the adorable couple that sang "Pork and Beans" and also one of my favorite Green album song "Keep Fishin'". Sigh, I miss the good 'ol Weezer. Great job, guys, and feel free to take and repost your pictures.

Night 2. It was great to go to both nights since the set lists were a bit different. Not drastically, but even if they were the same, I wouldn't have minded really. Some of the songs that they sang on one night and not the other were "Bulletproof Heart", "Thank you for the Venom", and "Our Lady of Sorrows". I was so happy they sang "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" on both nights. I just love their first album. It's the album that only die hard fans really love and know. Most people know Three Cheers and Black Parade because that's when they started getting mainstream radio airplay. Regardless, I still remain a big fan because I still love what they do and they haven't disappointed me. Also, they are really humble and appreciate their fans.

Night 1. It was so much fun. I felt like a teeny bopper and danced more than I should've. I forgot how old I am. Well, I paid the price for dancing and having that much fun. My calves and thighs were in pain the next several days. Either way, it was so much fun. There's nothing like dancing to your favorite songs and jumping around. I'm going to sound really teeny bopper and say that I say Lyn-z and she was stunning. I also won't go into how long I've loved this band and how they were the only ones that got me through a really crappy time working in this industry.

Why does it get so lonely lonely

Hey, guys. The reason why I haven't been blogging is because I literally have not been going out. The past two months, I've been crazy busy at work. I even missed a gararge rock movie screening event which I rsvp'ed to because I got a last minute project and had to stay at work until 8pm. So, my nights and weekends were spent trying to stay healthy and not get sick from all this stress. I've gotten more white hairs and my skin is a mess right now, but I'm doing good. After being non-stop busy at work, I really want to make the most out of my Memorial Day weekend. The weather is amazing. However, please stop by again because I have a lot of shows planned ahead and lots of photos to come. Have a great weekend! It's the official non-official summer kick-off! And you know I love summer.

It was so hot inside as it was summer and there was no AC. Thankfully, the ice cream truck gave out free popsicles. This was back in June 2006. I took this picture.

No, I didn't go to Coachella. But I did watch my favorite bands on the webcast. And I just wanted to tell you that Matt Shultz was the best dressed at the festival. Cage the Elephant is hands down one of my favorite bands ever. Both albums are so freaking awesome. And he's just the best most energetic frontman ever. Although I listen to lots of different types of music, I seriously fucking love loud punk rock. Back to his outfit. He's the only one who could pull it off anyways.

Saturday was the SXSW Kick-Off show at the Echoplex in LA. There were five bands and Franki Chan deejayed. We went specifically to see Chapel Club! We bought our tickets in advance and were excited to see them. Their music is lovely. First heard them on NME Radio. I know I keep talking about how sad I am that Indie103 and WOXY are now defunct. It's been years so I should move on, but they played amazing music, and amazing music just makes me so happy, feeds my soul. So, now my source for music is NME Radio (because I don't have XM Satellite), it's sad that America doesn't have good radio stations. Now they are trying to stop NPR. Even the oldies station that I grew up listening to doesn't play "oldies" anymore. It's just not the same. Okay, I will stop ranting and just tell you that we finally saw Chapel Club live and it was awesome! Got there in time to check out several other bands, but when Chapel Club hit the stage, it was different. So good and so strong.

Chapel Club's album "Palace" is really, really good. It's hard to listen to full albums, ever since the itunes singles culture. And honestly, some albums aren't as great as the single. Then once in a while, a really awesome album comes around. There are a few and I think "Palace" is definitely one of those. The flow of it. And you know those songs that make you instantly feel melancholy and you start to kind of choke up because it's such a beautiful song? Yeah, the last track on the album.

Recently, I met up with my lovely friends for dinner at Urth. I totally love seeing them, always so much fun. My friend (hand pictured above) always has amazing jewelry because she and her husband have their own accessories line called Flea Market Girl. You can find them at Third Street Promenade, Melrose Trading Post, and various indie craft shows such as Renegade and Unique. They also have an amazing website and blog. Designs are seriously awesome at unbelievable prices. I'd check it out if I were you.

It was pouring rain Saturday evening. I really didn't feel like going out because of it. Well, I braved the rain when I heard the event I was supposed to go to wasn't cancelled, and that tents were put up. Yay for going to see Ted Leo play the Mondrian Sessions at the Skybar! As soon as I got there, I felt happy that I made it out. I would've been dumb to miss it. It was super awesome to hear Ted Leo's acoustic set in such an atmospheric setting. He even did a Nick Lowe cover. You're so cool.

My super, lovely, awesome, talented friend flew in for the weekend with her husband for the Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary art show that they helped put on. She did all the wonderful graphic designs for the t-shirts and stationery (see below). It was held at the historic Clifton's Cafeteria in Downtown LA. It was the perfect setting for this art exhibit. The line literally stretched all the way down the block. A lot of people came out, which was not surprising given the size of the TV show's cult-like following. I had a really good time and it was so nice to see my friend. I don't see her often since she moved, but she is always an inspiration to me. Not only is she super creative but she is so fun and has a positive beautiful energy.

Last September, I heard a song on NME radio that I fell in love with instantly. Sadly, I had no idea who this was. Lucky me, the next day, they played it again and the DJ said it was a song called "Listen To Your Love" by Mona. I found the one song available on iTunes and bought it. Since that day, it's been on heavy, heavy rotation. Just something about that song was so perfect, so cool, so rock and roll. I always think to myself, I want to look like that song. This song made me really excited about the music scene again. Being that the UK is so much more forward and unbelievably more stylish than us, Mona has made a name there already, have played several shows, and signed with Rough Trade Records. Being in LA, I had to just sit and wait for months. Then, they finally came and played their first LA show at the Echo the other night. I had a lot of expectations, and having seen so many live bands, I've become a tough critic. However, it was all that I wanted. Their live set was so tight and sounded amazing! Nick can really sing. The band's got swagger. They're just pure rock and roll that I love. This night was a reminder of how happy rock and roll music makes me. Their album will be out this May. So exciting.

Saturday night, we went to the opening reception of the 19th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibit at FIDM. It was a nice night. The invitation said "cocktail attire" to which I wore a Ben Sherman shirt, Diesel leather biker jacket, black skinny jeans, Giuseppe Zanotti boots, Vivienne Westwood earrings, and rings by Noir and Fallon. It was super packed as usual but I think I've mastered the art of maneuvering my way through the crowd, even when the crowd has plates of food or drinking glasses. The costumes were exciting to see, as always. This exhibit is free and open to the public, should you feel like checking it out. These are the actual costumes from all the movies. It's great to see the use of different fabrics, and seeing how it looks worn and aged, and not new.

In case I didn't whine enough already, they have blocked all streaming music at work since late last summer. Before they blocked it, I would listen to NME Radio (since WOXY left me). I actually like not knowing what song will play next. That's why I can't always listen to only my ipod. Revisiting past favorites or discovering new music makes me incredibly happy. Anyways, right before they blocked it, I heard a song that I really liked. They didn't say the artist's name, so I figured I could memorize the lyrics and google it. Google I did, but no results. I constantly googled it and youtubed it, but nothing. How on earth will I figure it out? Fast forward many months later, I'm still thinking about that song. I search for it again, and it comes up! The Vaccines. Yes, they were playing a show in LA! I plan to go. I start getting anxious and just buy my tickets online. As expected, it sold out. Yes, I've been seeing them in my magazines. I've been really behind in reading my latest magazines. I've been sick for a few days before the show. I almost can't make it to the show. After a hard day at work, I come home and lay in bed. Later, I find my Nylon Magazine and finally read the article. I feel better. I miraculously make it to the show. And had the best time ever. Not a single song I don't like. Can't wait for the album.

With a fresh new album out, White Lies played a sold out show at the Troubadour to eager and happy fans. With an addition of a new guitarist, Giant Drag opened. It's been several years since I happened to see them at Spaceland. They have a new album coming out. I know they've had quite the following here in LA. Then, White Lies took the stage and played a really strong set. Everything sounded great, as usual. They played their new songs such as "Strangers", "Bad Love", and "Streetlights" from Ritual. The crowd danced to old favorites such as "Death" and "Farewell to the Fairground". We enjoyed the show very much.

Part 2 of my day at LACMA. I finally got to see the Fashioning Fashion Exhibit. I love mens fashion and also want to bring lace fans back. We ended the day with a late lunch at Canter's Deli. The lighting and interior made me feel like I was in an Eggleston photo. I ate yummy vegetable soup, sweet potato fries, pickles, and chocolate phosphate. They also have an amazing bakery. We took home some eclairs and devoured them later that evening.

We spent a very nice day shopping and dining in Santa Monica, then drove up PCH just in time for the sunset. The new Santa Monica Place is very nice. I love it. Highlight of the day: hearing "Primary Colours" by The Horrors while shopping at the allsaints store.

New Year's Eve party at the Hollywood Standard Hotel with Autolux and Raveonettes. Overall, it was nice, but I was just freezing cold, even standing by the heat lamps. I wasn't even wearing a dress, but since I'm a total LA girl, to me, LA winter weather feels down right freezing. So, since I wasn't wearing a winter coat, gloves, or hat, I was so cold. I was so cold I couldn't stand it. So after freezing our behinds off, we hung out in the lounge a bit, talked with random drunk people in line for the bathroom, watched beautiful people, and later we went to see The Raveonettes play as we rang in the new year. Happy New Year!

2010 was amazing!!! Filter's Culture Collide Festival was freaking awesome! I won the Talenthouse competition and my film was screened at the ASVOFFilm Festival in Paris! Travelling! I wanted to remake the first video because at the time it was made, I didn't even have a camera tripod (hence the shaky shots), and I had really bad lighting (it was way too dark). I liked the play-doh figures so I thought it deserved a better film quality. Eventually, I decided to add 5 new girls and create a "Part 2". The whole process took a really long period, since I don't have a lot of spare time. Well, here it is. I hope you enjoy it! This month flew by. There was a happy birthday and a beautiful wedding, then lots of Christmas shopping and errands. I feel very happy. Yesterday, work shut down early afternoon, so we made the most of it by enjoying a movie, dinner at a local diner, Crumbs cupcakes, and a drive through Christmas Tree Lane. Also, I finally bought this book yesterday. I've been a fan of The Selby since I can't remember. If you love being inspired by pictures of interesting people's creative spaces, you need to buy this book. You have to be in the right mood or else you will just turn green with mad envy.

I had a total head trip when I turned to this page because my parents had the same pistol and motorcycle perfume bottles! I remember seeing them around the house when I was a very little kid! Wish we had kept them...

It was Fall of 2004 when I first fell in love with a band called My Chemical Romance. They had just come out with "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge". I heard "I'm Not Okay" and just instantly got hooked. I remember seeing the first version music video. I was totally into them. Then, they came out with the second version music video for that song which made me so excited. I mean, preppy school uniforms? Really? Awesome! I bought their first album right away and all I listened to were these two albums. The sound was so grand. The band was so theatrical and cinematic. It was everything I loved about art. When done right, there's nothing more exciting to me than amazing visuals and sounds that come together: the video, the imagery, the uniforms, the look, the style, the voice, the shredding, the story of the album, the epic sound, the energy, the concept. I don't care much for the emo kids and if people judge the band or their fans. Gerard Way is amazing. He is my muse. He inspires me as an artist so much. So, I first saw them at the Wiltern, sadly from the second floor, October 2004. Then, I saw them at the AP Anniversary show at the HOB Sunset where The Like and The Transplants played and MCR headlined in May of 2005. I still remember that day so clearly. What I wore, the feeling in my heart as I walked down Sunset from the parking lot to the venue. The music video for Helena was perfect. Marc Webb and MCR at their finest. Another thing I love about them is that as dark as they can get, it's such a beautiful darkness. It's never any gore. When I first discovered this band, I was at such a difficult time in my life. They helped me through. Black Parade was awesome as well. But I didn't get to see them during this tour because they were just so huge, they only played huge venues. And you know, I just don't do those. Then, when I saw the video for "Na Na Na", I got extremely excited again. They really did not disappoint. Very excited with the Killjoys and the direction they took. They just keep getting better. But I still love each album for what they are. "Demolition Lovers" never gets old. I can vividly see scenes for the music video in my head for that one. Oh, and they were totally into vampires way before the Twilight craze.

We went to the record release show at the HOB Sunset! It was such a deja vu moment. HOB is notorious for their strict camera policy and the tickets even said "No Cameras". So, stupid me, I didn't bring my camera. Whatever. Thank goodness my buddy brought a camera. Thanks for the pictures! I took some pictures with my phone. While we were standing in line, two guys dressed up as Draculoids were walking up and down the sidewalk. That totally got me pumped. I'm such a sucker for concepts and ideas and great execution. Yes! After freezing our behinds off in line, we finally made it inside. We were standing towards the back of the floor section. When the show started, I totally left my buddy and made my way in. It was so much fun dancing and going crazy. I made it to like fourth row by the end! They started with Na Na Na and then went into Not Okay and we all pretty much lost it. It was super fun. Outside, they had a "fair" going on. Where you can play games and win fun stuff. They also gave out free snow cones and popcorn. They had the costumes, props, and the Trans Am from the music video on display. Seriously, the best record release party ever. New album is so good. I totally recommend.

The record release show was broadcast live on MTV.com. You can see it again up on YouTube. I'm somewhere in there in that crowd. Awesome. Now I'm gonna go dye my hair red.

We checked out the Sanrio 50th Anniversary "Small Gift" Pop-up event at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. We went pretty early as I had evening plans that day. It got crowded fast. Parking was ten freaking dollars. There was no admission, but pretty much, everything cost money in there. From all the activities to the photo booths. I've been to fun events where it's more of a promotional event, so everything is usually free, like drinks and photobooths. However, at the Sanrio event, there was a ticket booth, where a ticket cost $2 and many of the activities required about 3 tickets. There was a long line for everything. It was fun to just browse and look. I enjoyed the small art exhibit portion. We didn't stay long as I wasn't planning on spending 6 bucks for a photo or standing in long lines. Mostly throughout elementary and junior high, I totally had my Sanrio phase. It definitely ended once I got to high school. It brought back a lot of memories. Especially the older characters such as Tuxedo Sam.

It must've been something I ate this day because I started to feel really ill late afternoon. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to make it to the show. I was feeling major bummed out. Then, I started feeling much better. So, I decided there was no way I'm going to miss Sondre Lerche at the Skybar for the IAMSOUND Records Mondrian Sessions. I got ready and headed out. Driving down Sunset Blvd, all the bars were pretty packed and there were even people on the sidewalks watching the tv screens of the big fight. Anyways, we got to the Skybar just in time for his set. When he started singing, I just felt so happy. These pictures don't do justice to how beautiful a night it was. It was outdoors by the pool. The dim lighting, the moon up in the night sky right above Sondre, the view of the city, the night air, the warmth from the heat lamps, the people singing along, and his beautiful songs. What a perfect night.

Their set was strong and energetic and they even did a cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway". That was pretty much it for me. So I decided to check them out again. I love good garage punk bands. So after an overwhelming lineup of shows, the finale of the amazing and successful Filter's Culture Collide festival was on Sunday at the Toyota Antics Block Party. This event was actually free with rsvp. They said they would have a separate area for the festival wristband holders, but it wasn't that great. I don't particularly like big festival setups, especially when they're free. We were very lucky because we got VIP wristbands. Who cares about the free beer, I was just so happy to be able to use a real bathroom. You know I really dread the festival porta-potty. Yuck! Well, to start off, we circled forever looking for a parking spot. I started to get really anxious because when I was circling, I could hear that White Lies had already started their set. I didn't know you could park at Taix. That's where we ended up parking. After checking in at VIP, we hurried over to the main stage where White Lies were singing the last song of the set. We got to meet them afterwards and take pictures. They were really nice and they signed stuff and took pictures for all their fans. I love White Lies. Then, we walked over to the other stage to see Amusement Parks on Fire. We also checked out part of Cass McCombs (I like his song "Dreams Come True Girl", very sweet doo-wop like). Then, it was time for Tokyo Police Club. It was a fun set with special guest Jeff from Passion Pit joining them for the last few songs. See picture of Greg below posing with a Youngest Indie moo card, and I didn't even ask him to do that. Sweet. Sea Wolf closed out the night at the church, but I had to go home as I had work the next day, and it was getting late. I was sad I missed it, as I do like Sea Wolf a lot. And it must've been amazing to hear "Wicked Blood" inside a church. As a music lover, I bought tickets to this festival as soon as it was announced. I didn't even know the full lineup, but it was by far one of the most exciting events ever in Los Angeles. I had a blast and it was just super exciting and awesome!

Third show of the festival was White Lies at, once again, the Echoplex. Seriously, so exciting to see these bands at a great venue. I can't stand huge venues. It's just not my thing. We watched part of Battle Circus' set. I thought they were really good, and I loved the sound that the organ piano added to their music. Also, Voxhaul Broadcast performed a strong set to many local fans. Last summer, I watched the webcast of Weenie Roast and was really impressed by how strong White Lies sounded during their live performance. (And yes, I do watch webcasts.) So ever since, I've been a fan. Another band I didn't get to see til this festival. It was so amazing. There are moments that come during a concert, that you just get this feeling complete with goosebumps and all, and you know you will remember this moment for a long, long time. Well, it happened during White Lies' set. It was when they were singing Death, hands down one of the most beautiful songs ever written, by the way. When they got to the bridge part, the lights went down, and tiny green lights danced on the floor like stars, or junebugs, to the music and Harry singing those beautiful lyrics. It felt epic and special. I wanted to capture that moment forever.

Next show we checked out from the festival was Klaxons at the Echoplex. I've been following Klaxons from the beginning as well, who hasn't, but I just never got around to seeing them live. I know they've played tons of shows in LA over the years, but yeah, it never happened with my scheduling or something. But I was excited that I would finally get to see them in a small venue. They took a long time setting up and I thought they would never come on stage. All the fans around me were dying in anticipation and it kept getting more crowded. After about a half hour delay, they finally came on and everything was okay. It was a great set and they sang all the old favorites such as Golden Skans, Magick, Gravity's Rainbow, and such. The band seemed happy and so were the fans.

The first show we went to for the Culture Collide Festival was the Black Lips at Echoplex. If you know me by now, you must know I'm a huge fan, longtime fan of the Black Lips. Actually, you probably don't understand how much I like them. I've endured getting kicked by crowd surfers and stage divers for them. Anyways, I was so excited to see one of my favorite bands of all time at such a small venue. Since the venue was smaller, the force of the insane crowd was totally bearable. I actually felt bad for anyone standing behind me. I danced so much that the days following this night I had an awful pain in my neck. Going home after the show, I had lost my voice. Honestly, during their set, I was able to forget everything and feel totally happy and excited hearing them play. Love their songs so much. Before them, we also checked out Kamp! and City Riots. They were both pretty good. You should check them all out. What an awesome show! Black Lips!!!

Filter Magazine's Culture Collide Festival! We went to the official kick-off party at the Standard in Downtown. It was supposed to be on the roof top but they changed it to the lobby since it rained a lot that day. They had free Mike's Hard Punch and lots of yummy food. Kamp!, The Witness Protection Programme, and Cole from the Black Lips all took turns at the DJ booth. A lot of excitement building for the awesome weekend full of shows to come. And awesome they were. Lots more coverage from the festival coming soon!

Notice that he is holding the "Ventures in Space" record! Cole, you totally get ten points for that. When I was a little kid, my dad would always play records on Saturday mornings, and The Ventures were definitely on heavy rotation. I really loved their sound.

Since the Hounds Below were on tour, we decided to check out their next show in Southern California. It was a Saturday night, so we drove down to San Diego to see them play at the Bar Pink. Long drives are fine as long as there is no traffic. I'm sure you all know about my motion sickness by now. It was a nice drive and I got to actually see so many stars in the sky. Few years ago, we had been to the Casbah in San Diego, and I just remember this rude bartender and hipster girls. But this time around, I was really shocked to see how friendly the people were in San Diego. So different from LA. I love nice people. The Hounds Below sounded great once again. They even did a cover of the Pixies at this show. I'm loving their sound (described as "Roy Orbison meets BRMC") and can't wait to hear more from this band. They have a few more shows this month in Canada and New York, so be sure to check them out. It was worth driving 4 hours (roundtrip). And it was the b e s t n i g h t e v e r.

The Hounds Below played a show at the Bootleg Theater last week. I went to see my friend Eric (guitarist for the Lashes), as he was touring with them playing organ. I hadn't seen him for several years. It was great to see him. Also, I honestly really enjoyed The Hounds Below. I love their music and their stage presence. It's been a while since I've felt so excited about a band, having seen so many. You definitely need to check them out. On a side note, this day, I almost went to go see the Drums since they were playing that same night, but I chose to go see the Hounds Below, and I am so glad I did. Not to mention, earlier that day driving home from work, I saw a rainbow. Good signs. Lovely night.

Went to the Fall Vibes party presented by Vice, Mad Decent, and MFG at El Cid. Abe Vigoda and Best Fwends were on the bill. I just knew it was an awesome party waiting to happen. It did not disappoint. It was super packed, we really had a hard time getting around. I knew of Best Fwends since 2006 but I never got the chance to see them live. It was more electro-video-gamey-punk back then. I was looking forward to their set. Their set was so much fun. One of my friends and the other moshers killed an inflatable gargoyle. I don't know why but I think free tequila had something to do with it. Their set had so much energy and screaming, I thought to myself, wow, it's been a while since I've seen a fun punk band. It's hard to get it right, but Best Fwends got it. Their energy reminded me of the good 'ol days of the Blood Brothers. It was crazy and awesome. You might not understand. Anyways, didn't get to take a lot of other pictures as I was distracted, but saw lots of friendly faces.

Life in plastic, it's fantastic

Had such a blast with my friends at the Warholian Exhibit opening night at Royal/T. Took forever finding parking, but after hunting with my friend, we found the perfect spot. Finally tried the Grilled Cheese Truck and had the Cheesy Mac and Rib. So yum. Loved everything. Everything that made me happy was there. Art by Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Shepard Fairey, Murakami, Damien Hirst. Fantastic pop artsy stuff. Cute mod dresses and adorable things at the gift shop. Dancing to Blur's "Boys and Girls" followed by Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer", DJ Diabetic spinning some great tunes. Barbie heel shaped cookies. Oh, and I seriously loved the "Porta-Party". At first, I was confused there were people taking pictures with the doors open. Later, when it wasn't so crowded, my friend and I went in and I thought it was the cutest thing ever. Lovely night.

The last month and a half were just crazy, stressful, exciting, and exhausting. Work got insanely busy. I haven't seen some of my friends in the longest time. I've been plain busy. Anyways, it's fall already! I know it's going to be really hot in LA for a few days, but hot weather in the fall is different from hot weather in the summer. I want my summers hot. A sure sign of climate change. This is real, everyone. Do something. Oh, and illustration here was based on a perfect photo I saw on a blog. But the blues are still blue

Although I've been living in Los Angeles all of my life, I've never been to a Dodger game. I've never been to a baseball game in my life. Upon finding out this truth, my lovely friend thought we should go. She bought tickets for some amazing seats for a good deal. The weather was absolutely perfect. We had our Dodger dogs and garlic fries. Even if the Dodgers lost horribly that day, I still enjoyed the game and had loads of fun with my friends. Later, people started to leave so we got to upgrade our seats. Later, we saw Donald Glover and Danny Pudi from one of my favorite shows, Community. They are so hilarious in that. It was a perfect day and we stayed all the way til the end of the game. So glad we did this right before summer came to an end.

Sleeping out of tune with our dreams disjointed

A while ago, I was listening to WOXY (and it was a long time ago, now that the station is no longer streaming). "Sylvia" by The Antlers came on and I instantly loved it. It's one of those songs that make me emotional and I feel a weird pain or sadness in my heart. To put it simply, it's a beautiful song. The way he sings, the lyrics, the grand sound. It's quite cinematic and inspires me as an artist. So I started to check out other songs by this band. I found the music video for "Two" on YouTube. It was my first time hearing that song and seeing the video. Same thing happened. I cried. Such a great video. When I want to cry, or just feel blue, I listen to The Antlers. Earlier this year they played the Troubadour. I wanted to go see them but, I hesitated because I wanted to save money and was also in a depressed state. Well, I waited too long because when I finally decided I wanted to buy tickets, it was sold out. I was beyond bummed out. Then, I was elated to hear that they were going to play at the Getty Center for the "Saturdays off the 405" free concert series. It was kind of chilly but overall it was such a gorgeous day.
